The 9th "Chinese Bridge" US High School Student Chinese Speech Contest

The 9th “Chinese Bridge” US High School Student Chinese Speech Contest was successfully held at UMass Boston Campus on March 8th. This event was sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and co-sponsored by CLASS and UMass Confucius Institute. Hainan Airlines provided a sumptuous banquet as well as three direct-flight airline tickets for June 2014 between Boston Logan and Beijing airports. This year, there were twenty two contestants from twelve states. A panel of judges was composed of six CLASS members, and a representative from Hanban. After each contestant’s speech, four to five questions were asked by the judges based on the content of the speech. The winners of this year’s contest were Soo Hyun Hong (Fay School, Ms. Huyan Laoshi), Emily Cipriani (Columbus Academy, Jeannine Subisak Laoshi), and Youjin Park (Ridgewood High School, Louise Cheng Laoshi.) The winners will have an opportunity to participate in the International Chinese Bridge Speech Contest for High School Students in China. Congratulations to them all! (Please refer to the Excel file for the complete list of the participants and winners.)

All contestants received certificates signed by Dr. Yu-Lan Lin, Executive Director of CLASS, and Ms. Baifeng Sun, Director of the Confucius Institute at UMass Boston. CLASS thanks Ms. Sun for her outstanding coordination for the entire event and looks forward to working closely with her in the future. Next year will mark the 10th anniversary for the speech contest. CLASS would like to enthusiastically encourage its members and students to participate in the upcoming event. All related information will be provided between December, 2014 and January, 2015. (Submitted by Annie C. Ku /CLASS)
